    Blu-ray Review: RE-ANIMATOR (1985)

    https://www.amazon.com/Re-Animator-2-Disc-Limited-Blu-ray-Jeffrey/dp/B072DR6FMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1502421426&sr=8-1&keywords=Re-AnimatorRE-ANIMATOR
    Directed by
Distributed by Arrow Films / MVD Entertainment Group

I love when I get a movie to review that just so happens to be one of my favorite horror films of all time!  It gives me a good excuse to go back and visit it again.   Tonight's review is one of those films.   I first saw RE-ANIMATOR when I was in the 6th grade and I fell in love with it.  I still love it to this day.  It is one of the few films I can watch over and over and never get bored with it.
Here is the plot synopsis from the MVD press release:

One of the most wildly popular horror movies of all-time, Stuart Gordon's enduring splatter-comedy classic Re-Animator returns to Blu-ray in a stunning restoration packed with special features!
When medical student Dean Cain advertises for a roommate, he soon finds one in the form of Dr. Herbert West. Initially a little eccentric, it some becomes clear that West entertains some seriously outlandish theories - specifically, the possibility of re-animating the dead. It's not long before Dean finds himself under West's influence, and embroiled in a serious of ghoulish experiments which threaten to go wildly out of control...
Based on H.P. Lovecraft's classic terror tale Herbert West - Reanimator and featuring a standout performance from Jeffrey Combs as the deliciously deranged West, Re-Animator remains the ground-zero of '80s splatter mayhem and one of the genre's finest hours.

I had the chance to watch this film years ago at a Horror Convention in Little Rock, AR with Jeffrey Combs and Stuart Gordon in attendance.   It was fun to see this film on the big screen, especially with the director sitting 2 rows in front of me!   It was just as fun watching it at home though, especially with this great new release from Arrow Video.  This film is crazy with some great over the top gore effects, and like most films from this time period, all are practical effects.   The film is also full of dark humor throughout.  Jeffrey Combs was the perfect actor to play Dr. West, and the beautiful Barbara Crampton is great as always.

I can't recommend RE-ANIMATOR enough.  If you have never seen it, please do so asap!  If you have seen it, revisit it and especially check out this new release.

I was so happy when I heard Arrow Video was releasing this film.  As you know, Arrow is one of the top DVD/BD companies out there, always putting tons of effort into their releases.   RE-ANIMATOR is available now and contains the following special features:

    Blu-ray Review: DEATH LINE (1972)

    http://www.blue-underground.com/product.php?product=279DEATH LINE
    a.k.a. RAW MEAT
    Directed  by:
Distributed by Blue Underground & CAV Distributing

You might know this film by it's alternate title of RAW MEAT, which is the title used on the old 2003 MGM U.S. DVD release.  I actually had that DVD but had never watched it yet.  I was excited to see that Blue Underground was releasing this new Blu-ray of the film and was glad to get the chance to review it for my website!   Here is the basic plot of the film courtesy of the Blue Underground website:

When a prominent politician and a beautiful young woman vanish inside a London subway station, Scotland Yard's Inspector Calhoun (Donald Pleasence of HALLOWEEN) investigates and makes a horrifying discovery. Not only did a group of 19th century tunnel workers survive a cave-in, but they lived for years in a secret underground enclave by consuming the flesh of their own dead. Now the lone descendant of this grisly tribe has surfaced, prowling the streets for fresh victims... and a new mate.
Norman Rossington (A HARD DAY'S NIGHT), David Ladd (THE WILD GEESE), Sharon Gurney (CRUCIBLE OF HORROR), and the legendary Christopher Lee (HORROR OF DRACULA) also star in this heart-stopping horror classic co-written and directed by Gary Sherman (DEAD & BURIED). Originally recut and released as RAW MEAT in the United States, now DEATH LINE has been freshly transferred and fully restored in 2K from the original uncensored camera negative and comes fully loaded with exclusive new Extras produced for this release!

I knew nothing about this film going into it, which is the way I like to go into movies I have yet to see.  I was very pleased with this film.   It reminded me of an urban "THE HILLS HAVE EYES".   I have always been fascinated by cannibal films, so this one is a nice addition to the collection.   The film is slow at some points, but overall it kept me entertained for sure.  Some of the gore is very well done, with the best scenes taking place in the cannibal's secret lair down in the subway tunnels.  His lair is full of rotting corpses, all in different stages of decay.

Another great thing about this film is the presence of the great Donald Pleasence!    Most known for his role of Dr. Loomis in HALLOWEEN, his character here is very entertaining!

Blue Underground has gone all out with another amazing release.  DEATH LINE is available now from Blue Underground on a DVD/BD Combo Pack and contains the following special features:

  • Audio Commentary with Co-Writer/Director Gary Sherman, Producer Paul Maslansky, and Assistant Director Lewis More O'Ferrall
  • Tales From The Tube - Interview with Co-Writer/Director Gary Sherman and Executive Producers Jay Kanter & Alan Ladd Jr.
  • From The Depths - Interview with Star David Ladd and Producer Paul Maslansky

Check out the ultra disturbing trailer for the upcoming film, FLESH OF THE VOID

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6536904/?ref_=nv_sr_1

If you are a movie buff like me, I highly recommend the website MoviePilot.com.  They have a tons of great movie news and info, and while recently browsing their website I came across an article about a film I have never heard of.   The film is called FLESH OF THE VOID and from the looks of the trailer, it is going to be a very shocking and creepy film.

Here is a brief snipit from the Movie Pilot article:

From Sodom & Chimera Productions comes controversial Austrian director James Quinn's first feature-length horro film, Flesh of the Void. Both gut wrenching and awe inspiring, this experimental art film is shot by sequence on expired Super 8 film from the '80s, and progresses to 16mm to both attain and accentuate the abstract and grotesque realism that FLESH OF THE VOID aims to capture. The trailer alone is instantaneously panic-inducing and more than succeeds in filling viewers with an undeniable sense of dread.

Check out the full article for more details.  Give the trailers below a watch and let me know what you think about this upcoming film.

Check out the award winning short film, DAWN OF THE DEAF

    http://www.dawnofthedeafmovie.com/

When I first saw the title for this film, I thought it was going to be a zombie parody movie that was probably going to be pretty non-pc and offensive to the deaf community.  Boy was I wrong!    This is not a comedy or spoof movie by any means.  In fact, DAWN OF THE DEAF is one of the best short films I have ever seen!   Here is the basic plot from the film's official website:

When a strange sound wipes out the hearing population, a small group of Deaf people must band together to survive.

I had no idea what to expect when I watched this film, but what I got was one of the most entertaining 12 minutes I have seen in a long time.   The film is brilliant and definitely makes me want to see more.

The film was directed by Rob Savage, and Mr. Savage, if you're reading this, I really hope that you are considering making this into a feature length film!

Watch the film below and then leave a comment to let me know what you think!

    Blu-ray Review: EVIL ED (1995)

    https://mvdb2b.com/s/EvilEdLimitedEditionBlurayDVD/AV092EVIL ED
    Directed by
Distributed by Arrow Films / MVD Entertainment Group

Arrow video keeps hitting the ball out of the park with their Blu-ray releases!    EVIL ED is another great release from Arrow and is a film that has been very hard to come by the past few years.  The out of print DVD was very expensive, so I was so happy to see that Arrow finally put out a new version of this film.

EVIL ED is another one of those classic horror films that I have always known about, but had never seen before.   It is one of the strangest horror films I have seen in a long time!    Here is the basic plot of the film from the MVD website:

WHEN HIS MIND BLOWS, ANYTHING GOES! A blood-soaked love letter to the splatter films of the '80s, video rental favourite Evil Ed returns in a brand-new Special EDition featuring an extended cut of the feature and hours of stomach-churning bonus features! Mild-mannered film technician Edward enjoys his job. That is, until he finds himself transferred from his regular post to the "Splatter and Gore department", where he's forced to edit hours upon hours of grisly video nasty footage. Traumatized by the onscreen violence, Ed starts to lose his grip on reality - with ghastly (and bloody) consequences... Owing a debt to films such as The Evil Dead, Re-animator and the early splatter classics of Peter Jackson, Evil Ed is a veritable smorgasbord of flying limbs, exploding heads, busty babes and creepy creatures!

This film is not a scary horror film by any means, it is mainly just gory yet with a light and almost comical tone at times.   It kind of reminded me a of the HOUSE movies from the 1980's as it contains a wide variety of creatures.   As Ed goes crazy, he continually sees things that aren't really there.  He imagines a dinosaur like creature in his refrigerator, and many of the people he comes across look like demons of a wide variety in the crazy mind of good 'ol Evil Ed!

The gore is very abundant in this film, and the practical effects look very good!   The  film also pays homage to other horror films throughout the movie, such as EVIL DEAD and HALLOWEEN.   All this makes for a very fun movie that I highly recommend.

Once again, Arrow Video has outdone themselves with another amazing release.   EVIL ED is presented in a 3 disc set, containing 2 different cuts of the film.    EVIL ED is a release you need to get your hands on now!   The Arrow Blu-ray/DVD combo pack is available now and contains the following special features:

  • 3-DISC LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS
  • Two versions of the film!
  • Original Stereo and 5.1 Audio Options
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing

Blu-ray Review: POOL PARTY MASSACRE (2017)

    https://poolpartymassacrestore.com/POOL PARTY MASSACRE
    Written & Directed by:
Produced & Distributed by:  Floating Eye Films

I have always been a fan of low budget independent horror films, but I have to admit that there are way more bad ones than there are good ones.  Every now and then, though, you'll find a diamond in the rough and POOL PARTY MASSACRE is the shiniest diamond I have seen in a long time!   This is what independent horror should be like!  Here is the basic plot of the film from the official website:

POOL PARTY MASSACRE BEGINS AS BLAIR WINTHORPE, A SPOILED ROTTEN COLLEGE AGED DAUGHTER OF WEALTHY PARENTS, IS PLANNING A POOL PARTY FOR A FEW FRIENDS AT HER PARENTS MANSION. WITH BLAIRE DETERMINED TO HAVE A RELAXING DAY BY THE POOL, AND ALL OF HER SELF ABSORBED FRIENDS FOCUSING ON THEMSELVES, NONE OF THEM SEEM TO NOTICE THAT THERE IS AN UNKNOWN KILLER IN THE HOUSE STALKING THEM. ONE BY ONE AS PARTY GUESTS ENTER THE HOUSE TO MAKE PHONE CALLS, HAVE SEX, REFILL DRINKS OR EVEN MASTURBATE, THEY ARE BRUTALLY MURDERED BY THE MYSTERIOUS KILLER. USING VARIOUS WEAPONS FOUND IN THE GARAGE, THE FACELESS KILLER CONTINUES TO MURDER AS MANY PEOPLE AS HE CAN IN CREATIVE AND BLOODY WAYS. WHAT STARTED OUT AS A RELAXING DAY BY THE POOL, QUICKLY BECOMES THE WORST POOL PARTY EVER.

My only complaint with this film is it's running time.   It clocked in at 79 minutes, but as fun of a time as I was having with this film, I wanted it to last much longer!  That is not really a complaint at all, of course, just a testament to how much fun this movie was!

You can tell this movie was made by a true horror fan.  Director  delivers everything you'd want in a slasher film including tons of babes, boobs, and blood...lots of blood!   The gore in this film was great, and I was happy to see all practical effects....something that is very rare these days, especially in low budget independent films such as this.    The movie is very fast paced with hardly any slow/down times.  The kills come fast and often and each one was different and unique from one another.  The killer basically just goes down the line using tools found on the workbench pegboard, replacing each one to it's correct spot after use, although quite a bit bloodier than we he took it off the pegboard!

The film had some humor mixed in as well, which I usually don't like in my horror films, but with this style of film it worked well.   POOL PARTY MASSACRE is Director Drew Marvick's first feature length film according to his imdb page.   If that is the case, I can not wait to see what else we get from this great talent in the future!   Way to hit a home run as soon as you step up to the plate, Mr. Marvick!   Indie horror is alive and well!

If you are a slasher film fan, or a horror fan in general, you need to check out this classic piece of cheesy slasher fun!   The DVD and Blu-ray is available now and the Blu-ray Special Features include:

    *  Director's Commentary with Drew Marvick and his Mom
    *  Cast Commentary with Nick Byer, Jen Marvick, and Kristen Noel McKusick
    *  Location Tour
    *  Gag Reel
    *  Making of Featurette

Mondo Macabro has long been one of my most favorite video labels.  They are constantly putting out great products and films that I usually have never heard of, but always enjoy.  INQUISITION is a film that once again I had never heard of, but thoroughly enjoyed.   The film stars and was directed by Paul Naschy and centers around a 16th century witch-hunt in France.  Here is the full plot synopsis from the CAV website:

In 16th century France, Inquisitor and magistrate Bernard de Fossey (Paul Naschy) travels to the plague-ridden region of Peyriac in search of witches and devil worshippers. Local beauty Catherine (Daniela Giordano) quickly catches his eye, tormenting him with impure thoughts, although her affections lie with her handsome fiancé Jean. Meanwhile, embittered one-eyed manservant Rénover (Antonio Iranzo) presents Bernard with his first group of torture victims when he accuses several sexy young things who spurned his advances of being witches responsible for the plague.
One by one beautiful women are tortured on the rack then burned at the stake. No-one seems able to halt the Inquisition's reign of terror or the baseless accusations that cause so many innocent deaths. When Jean dies in mysterious circumstances, Catherine allies herself with Satan to get revenge on her enemies - foremost among them, De Fossey himself.
This was horror star Paul Naschy's directorial debut and one of his very best films. He plays three roles - Inquisitor De Fossey, the Devil, and the Grim Reaper. The film is a brutal and unrelenting portrait of a past when superstition and terror ruled the minds of men.

I have always been fascinated by witch trail films.   There is a real horror to the thought of women being tortured and killed based on hysteria and accusations rather than fact and proof.  The fact this actually happened in multiple parts of the world is even more horrifying.

This film reminded me a lot of the 1970 film, MARK OF THE DEVIL, except I think I enjoyed this film even more.    There are some great torture scenes in this film, including one involving a woman's nipple that made me cringe!   Yet as grotesque as it was, I had to rewind and watch it again to see if I could figure out how they did the effect!  I am a huge fan of special effects (especially gore effects in horror films), so I was very impressed by this scene.   If you have seen the film, you will know exactly what scene I am talking about.  If you haven't seen this film, I won't say any more to keep from spoiling it for you!

If you enjoyed MARK OF THE DEVIL and the early Hammer Films, I think you will really enjoy this one.

INQUISITION is available now on Blu-ray from Mondo Macabro and CAV Distribution and contains the following special features:

    Blu-ray Review: OBSESSIONS (1969)

    http://www.cultepics.com/product-detail/obsessions/OBESSIONS
    Directed by
Distributed by Cult Epics / CAV Distributing

I haven't done a review for a Cult Epics release in a while, so I was glad to get the chance to review one of their latest releases, OBSESSIONS.  This is a very interesting crime/thriller from director Pim de la Parra and was co-written by Martin Scorsese!  I had never heard of this film before, but I really enjoyed this one.  Here is some more info about the film from the Cult Epics website:

The obscure film OBSESSIONS (aka HOLE IN THE WALL) was directed by Dutch artsploitation auteur Pim de la Parra and co-produced by longtime collaborator Wim Verstappen (BLUE MOVIE). This gritty, psychedelic Hitchcockian mystery, which is notable for being the first Dutch film shot in English-language, starts in a savagely brutal fashion. When a bloody painting of Vincent van Gogh falls from a wall and exposes a makeshift peephole, student protagonist Nils Janssen (played by the film’s German co-producer Dieter Geissler) becomes an unwitting witness to a gruesome sex crime next door.  When his young fiancée Marina (Alexandra Stewart of Truffaut’s DAY FOR NIGHT), an enterprising journalist, tells him about a report of a murder that she is writing, he naturally wonders if it’s the very same killing.
This classic exploitation film was the birth of auteur cinema in Holland, and inspired legendary filmmakers such as Paul Verhoeven to make their start in the industry.  Originally distributed in over 100 countries, the film remained unreleased in the U. S. (and France) – until now.  Perhaps most notably, the film was co-written by a young Martin Scorsese, who shot the legendary erotic dream sequence for his first feature WHO’S THAT KNOCKING AT MY DOOR (1968) in Amsterdam, that same year.  Additionally, the film also stars legendary Dutch filmmaker Fons Rademakers (MIRA, THE ASSAULT), is edited by Henry Rust (CHILDREN OF PARADISE) and scored by Hitchcock composer Bernard Herrmann (TAXI DRIVER, SISTERS, VERTIGO). OBSESSIONS is a curious cultural hybrid where late-1960s Dutch exploitation and classic Hollywood Hitchcock collide in a provocative and revolutionary fashion. Blu-ray/DVD Combo.

This was a very interesting film, not horror so much, more of just a dark mystery/thriller.  It reminded me of the early Giallo films of Dario Argento, although this is not a true Giallo film by any means.    The movie was very well made and was different in that a lot of the key action takes place in the apartment next to our main character, Nils,  with the camera looking through the peephole in the wall.  This was a unique way to witness key scenes and made you feel like you were a part of the action!

The film was very suspenseful throughout, but especially so in one scene where Nils breaks into the neighbor's apartment and gets trapped there as the man comes back before he has a chance to get out.  Nils hides under the bed hoping to not get caught, while his girlfriend makes a distraction and gets the man to leave his apartment so Nils can finally escape.  I was on the edge of my seat during the scene, nervous that Nils was going to get caught!

While OBSESSIONS is pretty tame by today's standards, it has a good story and keeps you entertained the entire running time, or at least it did me anyway.   I would definitely recommend this one!

OBESSIONS will be available May 30th on Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and will contain the following special features:

. New HD Transfer (from original 35mm film)
. Introduction by director Pim de La Parra (HD, 2017)

    Blu-ray Review: DARK WATERS (1994)

    https://severin-films.com/dark-waters-films/DARK WATERS
    Directed by:
Distributed by CAV Distribution / Severin Films

I always love getting films for review that I have never heard of before.  I think of myself as being pretty informed when it comes to horror movies, but every now and then I find a film that I have heard nothing and know nothing about.  DARK WATERS is one of those films.   I went into it not knowing what to expect, I came out of it wondering how this one is not more well known.  Maybe it is more well known and I just missed it somehow.   It's a remarkable film that has some of the creepiest imagery I have seen in a long time.   Here is some more info about the film from the CAV press release:

It has been acclaimed as visually amazing (Videoscope), deeply disturbing (BBC Radio One), a must see for serious horror buffs (Film Review), and compared to the works of Bergman, Bava and Argento. Now experience the modern Nunsploitation masterpiece from co-writer/director Mariano Baino as you've never seen or heard it before: When a young Englishwoman attempts to discover her mysterious connection to a remote island convent, she will unlock an unholy communion of torment, blasphemy and graphic demonic depravity. Louise Salter (INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE) stars in this stunning and horrifying debut (Digitally Obsessed) - filmed on location along the grim Ukraine coast - now transferred in HD from the original 35mm negative and featuring over 4 hours of startling Special Features.

The film is very strange as it is not very dialog heavy at all....as I mentioned before the imagery is some of the best, and the director lets that take the main stage in the film.   The camera work is amazing and the practical effects are very well done.  While I found it interesting that the film was told more with imagery than with dialog, the lack of dialog could have led to my confusion about the plot/story.   It was a little hard to follow at times, and some things weren't explained as well as I thought they could have been, but honestly this did not keep me from enjoying the film.

While this film is advertised as a "Nunsploitation masterpiece", this is not your typical Nunsploitation flick at all.  In fact, I would not even begin to put this film in that classification.   This is a dark Italian horror film that just happens to have a plot that revolves around Nuns and a convent.  These are not like any Nuns you have ever seen before....they are almost coven like and very evil.

This is a very creepy film that I highly recommend for all horror fans, especially Italian horror fans.
DARK WATERS is available now on DVD and BD from Severin Films and CAV Distributing and contains the following special features:

  • Audio Commentary With Writer / Director Mariano Baino
  • Lovecraft Made Me Do It Featurette
  • Let There Be Water Featurette
  • Controlling the Uncontrollable Featurette
  • Deep Into the Dark Waters Featurette

Guest Blu-ray Review: CALTIKI: THE IMMORTAL MONSTER (1959)

    https://mvdb2b.com/s/CaltikiTheImmortalMonsterBlurayDVD/AV086CALTIKI:  THE IMMORTAL MONSTER
    Directed by:   and
Distributed by Arrow Films / MVD Entertainment Group

I haven't had a guest review posted on my website in a long time.  I figured it's about time to change that.  You're all probably tired of my ramblings anyway!   This time though, you don't get just one guest reviewer, you get two!  It's not a fellow blogger, or a known writer, either.  Nope, this time the guest review is being done by my twin 10 year old boys!   I don't review too many horror films that the boys can watch with me, so they were super excited to be able to watch this one.  It's a pretty tame black and white horror film from 1959 called CALTIKI:  THE IMMORTAL MONSTER.  Here's the synopsis of the film courtesy of the MVD website:

Arrow Video presents a collaboration between two giants of Italian cult cinema - Riccardo Freda (The Vampires, The Horrible Dr Hichcock) and Mario Bava (5 Dolls for an August Moon, Blood and Black Lace)! A team of archaeologists led by Dr John Fielding (John Merivale, Circus of Horrors) descends on the ruins of an ancient Mayan city to investigate the mysterious disappearance of its inhabitants. However, the luckless explorers get more than they bargained for when their investigation of a sacrificial pool awakens the monster that dwells beneath its waters - the fearsome and malevolent god Caltiki. Though Riccardo Freda received sole directing credit, a significant portion of the film was in fact the work of Mario Bava, who also served as its cinematographer and was responsible its striking special effects. Drawing on a diverse array of influences, from The Quatermass Experiment to the works of HP Lovecraft, Caltiki the Immortal Monster is a unique and unforgettable sci-fi chiller which showcases these two legendary filmmakers at their most inventive. Presented here for the first time in a newly restored high definition transfer, Caltiki shines - and terrifies! - like never before.

I've shown my kids THE BLOB (1958) and THE BIRDS (1963), and they loved those, so I figured they would enjoy this one.  I also knew being from 1959 (and doing a little internet research) that it was going to be tame enough to let them watch it.   So here you go, each review is just a short paragraph, but I think they did a pretty good job!   **SPOILER ALERT **  Bewarned, there are some spoilers in these reviews!

I have not seen too many horror movies in my life but I enjoyed this one. Caltiki came out in 1959 so it was tame enough for me to watch.  This movie had good parts and bad parts. One of my favorite scenes was when Max was running from the police. It was very intense and kept me on the tip of my chair.  Another one of my favorite scenes were when the mother and the baby were crawling outside the windows trying to escape from the monster that was taking over their house.  Something that I really enjoyed about this movie was the music. I think it really fit the movie considering the intensity of it. Also considering the effects were not as great as they are today back in the late 50’s,  these effects were pretty good. A few things bad were that some of the story was sort of hard to follow. Also, they quickly came to the conclusion that you could just burn him, making him not that immortal. Over all the movie was great.  Good for someone who doesn’t want something too scary, but just a little creepy.
       - Levi

I am not the biggest horror movie fan but I enjoyed “Caltiki the immortal monster” because it was not as scary as some as the new movies coming out today. I liked the scenery on the jungle ruins, they showed a lot of hard work and effort put into them. The music was not often played as in some other movies, but when it was played it sounded really good! The effects were good for the time of 1959. A bad thing that I found was that the natives wore American looking clothing instead of tribal and/or old clothes. Another not so great thing was that they said “You can only kill it with fire but they only tried 2 things, guns and fire.  It’s more like “Caltiki the bullet proof monster”. Also they killed the “immortal” monster and there wasn’t even a twist ending that he was still alive, so much for immortal! Finally the fire effects and fire tanks where really cool! If you love horror movies or even if you're not a big fan like me,  you can still enjoy this movie whoever you are.
      - Luke

Well, there you have it.  I couldn't have said it better myself!  I think they did a great job and I found it interesting that they both mentioned the music in the film, pretty good observation I thought.
